Physically trapped within his castle walls, Mikel is a Nallie, a cross between human and vampire. His kind was created by alien vampires who wanted to create an army of soldiers to overtake Earth and ultimately rule. One other Nallie lives, Dari, and she lives far away, and is unaware of the powers she will have one day if she and Mikel are joined. Mikel protects her from afar. When their enemy, alien vampire Grayson, tracks her down, Mikel will do anything to keep her safe. Once mated, they will have a chance to be free from Grayson. Or their powers will be so strong as to incinerate themselves.

Blood Ties was a little bit different from what I was expecting and rather an intriguing twist to some of the monotonous vampire stories on the market today. The author infuses her characters with some different traits that we haven’t seen in other stories and it’s a refreshing change. Dari was innocent yet worldly due to her history, which existed more in her dreams and memories than in the present time. Mikel was a good character even though he was not quite the alpha one would expect. He takes his role as Dari’s protector very seriously but I thought his character was a little bit overshadowed by Ayden, who is Mikel’s assistant and sometimes lover. I had a problem with that at first, but in perspective, Mikel’s solitary existence begs for companionship and Ayden is all he has with him. I was left with some questions at the end about the true relationship between the characters and wonder if the author has plans to continue this as a series. The sex scenes are ultra sensual and explicit at the same time.
