Veronica Cooper is an unusual woman in late nineteenth century Boston, MA as she's an openly curious virgin. Further, Ms. Cooper invites Boston society into her sexual quest with her first novel detailing her sexual fantasies and desires. However, she wishes to continue to write and needs additional material but lacks the actual experiences to continue. However, when her explorations lead to public scandal, Veronica is required to marry. Talbot Bowdain is a publisher whose sexual proclivities are extensive and is more than willing to marry the talented writer. Talbot's sexual experience is more than adequate to keep Veronica in writing material for multiple books to come. However, Veronica's interest in Talbot is not just for literary pursuits and she refuses to allow their marriage to remain on a purely physical level.

While this was the fourth book in the Blooming Companion Series, this was the first book I've read by Ms. Trent. I was hopeful that this book was exactly what I'd been searching for as it I love historical romance and was intrigued with the unique aspects of this novel. Yet, I found it difficult to connect with the characters and invest in their developing relationship. Talbot was rather detached emotionally throughout the majority of the story. Veronica demonstrated some growth as a character. During the first portion of the story, I did not like her at all as she seemed quite closed-minded and snobbish towards her lower class lover. However, after her social "downfall," I felt that she became more compassionate. Unfortunately, these minor changes in her personality were not sufficient to promote the story from average to spectacular. Further, the sexual aspects of this story, while exceptionally hot, overwhelmed the characters and plot of story. The unique and rather explicit sexual situations added to the story only in the distinctive nature of the character's fetish to this reader. Overall, the story did not become a favorite of mine, it was a singular experience.
