| What a perfect love story! Through the tears and Kleenex, smiles and excitement escalated toward the ending of the story! Ms. Dobbs is an incredible story teller! I haven’t yet read any other of her works, but I definitely will search her out for upcoming reading. This is quite possibly the perfect love story. Even though it turns out unlike I could possibly expect, and there were a myriad of endings which could have been substituted for the actual one, I say that she picked the best ending to make this the ideal love story of our time.
A week before Christmas, in the middle of World War II, Betsy and her best friends Nancy and Linda were working the at the USO building, entertaining the soldiers and making friends. When her eyes met those of Private John Lakeside (Johnny), Betsy knew that her life would be changed forever. Before the night was over, they had baked chocolate chip cookies; that was not all that was heated up! For the next few days, Betsy and Johnny spent as much time together as possible. As happened frequently during this time, they married before he shipped out on Christmas Day. The characters and subject matter of this story were well thought out and poignant during this time of turmoil and strife in our own country. Ms. Dobbs’ approach to this story was heartrending and emotional. I really enjoyed this story and recommend it to anyone! Kudos to Ms. Daisy Dexter Dobbs!
