| Savannah Reid and friends are at it again. Savannah doesn't much like Clarissa Jardin due to her attitude toward people who, like the ace detective, may carry around a few extra pounds. When it appears that Clarissa is a prime suspect in the murder or her husband the hardnosed but tender hearted investigator and her cop friend Dirk Coulter are on the case. The list of potential suspects just keeps growing as the investigation leads through some of the seamier sides of their sweet California community.
G. A. McKevett pens another winner in this series. Savannah Reid is one of those characters I can't get enough of. Granny Reid's southern wisdom helps keep our heroine grounded when she‘d rather just act naturally. The way McKevett builds Savannah's character as part tough ex cop with an addiction to sweets, part southern belle but always with an eagle eye out for clues, is excellent. Wit, strength of the characters who support Savannah and Dirk as well as a mystery that will keep you guessing up to the end fills these pages in a style that makes the book fly by. It's almost sad when the story ends because this writer's style draws me to these characters and their lives like only a few others do. Each character in the supporting cast has a chance to shine and add touches of real friendship to the pages. Tammy whose computer savvy helps fill in some missing pieces is great. Ryan and John, gay partners, ex FBI, and friends add their help and sometimes a shoulder to lean on. Dirk himself is priceless. Tough cop who runs a tight ship, he can still be left speechless by Savannah's skills and her sharp tongue. These characters interact like best friends. It gives the book a flavor that few authors are able to pull off as well as this one. The whole series is addictive and this is among the best of them.
