| Cards on the Table by Josh Lanyon takes a curious writer, a fifty year old Hollywood murder and weaves them with an intense love story. Tim North opens a can of worms when he decides to write about the unsolved murder of starlet Eva Aldrich. His relationship with Jack Brady seems to be one of unrequited love as they both struggle to share their thoughts and feelings with one another while doing research for the book. The mafia, aged stars from the fifties, astrology and Tim's epilepsy combine to keep us on the edge of our seats from first page to last. Josh Lanyon is one of my favorite writers. He knows how to combine gay romance and mystery in a way that few others can match.
Murder at the Heartbreak Hotel by Sarah Black combines romance, murder, and some of the unique people who populate Alaska into an excellent tale. Sebastian McCann and Peter Moon have been lovers for years. Sled-dog racing has been Sebastian's love since long before he met Peter. The hotel seems to be as big a part of Peter's heart as Sebastian. Peter has a brief but intense affair with a hotel guest but then his lover is murdered. When tragedy strikes the romance between the two men takes on new meaning and seems to climb to new heights of sharing and companionship. The characters, dialogue, and way Ms. Black builds the story is exceptional. These two stories are both powerful and erotic. Each author is gifted with the ability to bring us into the story as if we're sitting in the corner watching it unfold rather than just reading it. Both of these stories are top of the line for both romance and suspense.
