Abby had a dilemma. Her father refused to wait any longer for her brother to arrive from Philadelphia. Her father wrote a note and departed for California to find his fortune. This left Abby unprotected in a town where the man who thought he owned the town, Newton Smith, was determined to possess her. Once he found out her father was gone, there would be no stopping him.

Abigail Sutton had no easy recourse. She had to get married quickly before Newton found out her father was not there. She decided to visit the town’s carpenter, Miguel Ruiz, a mixed bred Mexican/Indian friend of hers. Miguel knew that he was putting himself in jeopardy by marrying a white woman but he had wanted her for years. When she told him why she needed a temporary husband, he agreed to her terms—extensive list that entailed.

The love story presented in this unique plot is beautiful but not quite as well developed as I would have liked. The storyline was all there and the ups and downs of their relationship were covered. However, I would have liked to see more character build-up. The writing team known as Melany Logen has done a good job of telling this dynamic story. The sensual scenes were gentle and almost comical because of the guidelines Abby had given him in the beginning.

The book is entertaining and a good read. I recommend it as an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon or evening.
