This story takes place in 1946. There is a tremendous sense of melancholy in both main characters, Sarah and Tom. Sarah is a war widow. She goes to a carnival with her close friends Grace and Mike. They bring along another friend Andrew. Grace is trying matchmaking again. Sarah found herself fascinated by the tattooed man in the freak show. He is entirely covered with tattoos. She and her friends went on to see more of the carnival and Sarah can't get the tattooed man out of her mind. The next morning Sarah hears that someone is missing from the carnival - the missing person is the tattooed man. Sarah later finds him hiding in her barn. She decides to offer him shelter in exchange for him helping her at the farm. As they get to know each other, Sarah fights her wild attraction to Tom. She learns about his troubled past, unusual isolated childhood and gentle, soothing nature. Tom had always been treated like a freak, which led to a great deal of bad behavior from other people. Can Sarah and Tom survive the conflicts created by others from fear and prejudice and build the family they both always wanted?
The characters of Sarah and Tom made me feel very protective toward them both. Sarah had suffered great loss when she became a widow and Tom had suffered tremendous horrors from the abuse he suffered at the hands of the evil carnival owner, his guardian from the age of 8, after his mother died. Sarah was drawn to Tom from the first moment she set eyes on him. Tom was drawn to Sarah because she represented the possibility of a normal life. She also showed him the first genuine caring he had experienced since he was a young child. This story is very intense and beautifully written. It addresses the issue of anyone who is "different" with a great deal of compassion. I recommend it to everyone.
