| When William's world crumbles, he doesn't know what to do. He lost his job when the economy went south, his boyfriend ended up being a cheating apartment stealer, and now his father has died. The world can not get any worse for William. At the will reading, his dad leaves him the cat. Now what? The cat is a very special cat, serving out a punishment after angering the goddess by not doing his job correctly. He has finally figured out after twenty years that he's here to save William now. Puss asks for a pair of boots and William buys them, creating a bond that will bring William and Puss to a new destiny through defeating an ogre for some friendly witches and following the path to true love.
The character of William is a wonderful refreshing take on a man who has lost everything, however, still retains his innocent soul. William never is bitter. He is just lost, not knowing what to do. Puss is just the being to help him find his place in the world. Puss, having been punished, is serving out his sentence reluctantly and will find out through the course of the story that not all people are greedy and manipulative when dealing with a magical being. My favorite part of the story is when Puss asks William for a pair of boots to wear -- imagine boots and a hat on a cat -- the visual is too funny. The author has written a wonderful story with secondary characters that are delightful. Gunnar, William's brother who loves William but doesn't understand him being gay. The friendly witches that Puss deals with are delightful and chatty, creating a nice fold for the lessons that Puss needs to learn. Overall, this book is a great read that flows smoothly, allowing you to become lost in the story. A perfect summer read.
