Brendon’s leprechaun family are shoemakers, whose product is so highly prized as to offer a two-hundred year guarantee. His aunt owns and operates the most magical castle in Ireland. Everybody in Brendon’s family does just fine, except Brendon himself. Brendon is unusual to be from a family of Little People because unlike any of the others, he stands at six foot three. After a sufficient number of faery ladies has rejected him, he decides to begin making the most of his muscular build, and it comes in handy when the ogre moves in and beats his brothers and steal shoe shipments from them.

Not so with Brendon; although bruised and bloodied, he successfully carries through on all his deliveries, so size can be important after all, he discovers. When he is attacked by a Valkyrie warrior who assumes he is the oracle, an entirely new dimension opens up to him. Helga seems very impressed with him, to the point of open flirtation. But when he is introduced to Th0r, Loki, and Balder, Brendon once again finds himself on uncertain ground.

Kate Hill pens an intriguing spin on magical legend and fantasy with this story of the “giant” leprechaun encountering Valkyries and Gods of Norse Spirituality and heritage. Brendon and Helga are characters this reviewer was pleased to encounter, and Thor, Balder, and Loki were quite intriguingly delineated as well. I’d like to see this topic continued with other characters as well, from Brendon’s family and from the legendary Norse contingent.
