| Bree Tanner is a vampire. The problem is that she knows little about what that even entails. She lives with a group of young vampires, like herself, commanded by another older vampire named Riley. Day after day, she feeds when she can, tries to follow the few rules she's given, and tries to fly under the radar when among some of the other, more volatile vampires who don't bat an eyelash at killing another of their kind.
Diego befriends the young girl and together they come to realize that what they've been told about their survival as vampires isn't exactly the truth. Why were they told that the sunlight would destroy them when it clearly wouldn't? They have each other. As the truth of their purpose slowly unfolds, can they find a way out in time? This novella is tied to the author's super famous Twilight series. If you've read Eclipse, you basically know how this novella ends. That being said, much information is given into the world of Bella and Edward's enemies in this short tale and as a fan of that series, I enjoyed that it because it gave more depth to antagonists that had little substance in the primary series. The author emotionally invested the reader in the character of Bree Tanner and offered the reader the inside story on the life of a regular -- not super gifted - vampire in this world. The novella is one big scene with no chapter or scene breaks and as a reader that frustrated me a little. I realize the author was coming from a place where the vampires don't sleep and life is one unending scene for them but some pauses would have been welcomed. Outside of that, I did enjoy the story and I have to say that I'd love to see Freaky Fred get his own story. If you're a fan of the Twilight series, absolutely read this novella.
