| Brett Peters walked away from the love of his life ten years ago when she backed out on their dream of being journalists in the Middle East. He had not been home, nor had he contacted Beth Phillips, since. He stayed in contact at least annually with his sister Karen in Orlando Florida. It was there he went to complete his rehabilitation after being shot in Iraq trying to save a nine-year-old girl, Seifa Ali, and her dog. He was shot in the thigh and would forever limp because of the injury. That wound was minimal compared to what he found when he returned to his sister’s house.
Beth had a nine year old son, Ryan, whom she had never told Brett about. Ryan didn’t know anything about his father except that he left Beth before Ryan was born. Because Beth and Ryan lived next door to Karen, it was imperative that she tell Brett he was a father before he saw his son. One look and there was no doubt. Maybe that was why he was so anxious to bring little Seifa to the United States so that she could have a better life. The chemistry was still there but was the couple any closer to a commitment than they had been ten years before? Ms. Cillian Burns has written a marvelous book which tugged at my heartstrings and surprised me with the numerous ups and downs the couple faced. Their story was poignant and the myriad of supporting characters just magnified the storyline told here. This couple faced so many obstacles that it seemed impossible for them to have their own happily-ever-after. Burns did a great job with the passion evident between the two main characters as well as the interference by the others who felt the need to hinder the love story that started in second grade. This book is an amazing, spell-binding look at a couple whose future was hampered ten years before and now stood a chance of becoming a masterpiece. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
