Rennie Wakefield and her daughter Kirsten are on the run from Philip Wakefield, abusive husband and father. After finally gaining the courage to run and escape their harsh home life in Boston, Rennie and Kirsten decide to settle in a small town in Colorado. Castle Rock proves to be a welcoming and openhearted community, a place where even a stranger can find a home. Rennie is scared and hesitant about accepting the kindness of the townsfolk, especially the Taggerts, the owner of the restaurant where Rennie gets a job. It is however the Taggerts' son Chase who really worries Rennie. He won't leave her alone. He stops by her house, wanting to help get her settled, he flirts with her at work, and if he thought she would allow it, he would most definitely lay a smacking kiss on her lips.

Sheriff Chase Taggert is unexpectedly drawn to the stranger in town. Rennie is beautiful and sweet, but there's a tragic air about her. He knows someone hurt her in the past; someone created the distrust she has for others, especially men…especially him. But Chase works hard to break through her defenses. He's never been so attracted to a woman in his life, and he likes spending time with Kirsten. He just hopes his patience and determination pays off because the more he gets to know Rennie, the more time he wants to spend in her company, the more he isfalling in love with her.

Rennie's past isn't about to stay hidden however. Philip will do anything to salvage his political career and he's not about to let Rennie and Kirsten stay hidden. He'll do whatever it takes to get her back. Will Chase be able to protect the two people who have come to mean so much to him? Will Rennie finally be able to stand up to Philip and prove that she's not a coward? You'll have to read Broken Promises to find out.

Broken Promises starts off tragically, with a woman and her daughter afraid of life, but as it continues, Rennie changes and starts to see that she can stand up for herself, that she can take care of herself. Rennie is an admirable woman because she has learned the hard way that happily-ever-after doesn't come easy. As much as Chase longs to take care of her, Rennie wants to prove to herself that she can be a strong and capable person, without the aid of a man. That doesn't mean however that she doesn't rely on Chase and as their relationship evolves, the reader will fall a bit in love with him because Ms. Rose shows Chase to be an extremely wonderful and caring man. I truly enjoyed this story because the characters proved to be such interesting and truly wonderful people. This is one of those stories that will just leave you misty-eyed and happy at the ending. Despite its title, Broken Promises definitely lives up to the promise of an endearing and truly touching story.
