| If there was one thing Elizabeth knew for certain, it was
that promises were made to be broken. Every promise she
could remember in a lifetime filled with puzzles had
strengthened that knowledge. Finally, she left her drunken
husband and moved forward into a life of work and
needlepoint, gardening and neighbors. Still, she was lonely.
Gathering her courage, she signed up for a online dating
service and answered one ad.
James was tall and handsome, a perfect gentleman who took her to a big flea market, then introduced her to new friends. Marta called her Betsy, and Jasper called her Beth. Elizabeth dared to hope her life was looking up, but at the same time she was being terrorized. Soon Marta moved away and James disappeared. She and Jasper separately and together looked for answers the police weren’t finding as the danger increased. He promised to protect her, but Elizabeth knew promises didn’t mean anything. Delving into the mysteries surrounding the attacks on Elizabeth’s home, car and family, Jasper and Elizabeth discovered a love neither was quite ready for. As they untangled the web of lies and cruelty, they walked into even more threats and danger. Who were truly friends and who were foes? How could they be sure? Could promises be kept after all? Promises Broken is an ensemble story with wonderful side characters and a nonstop puzzle. Sue Thornton wrote for readers who enjoy sorting out mysteries while rooting for lovers. The resolution was a bit hard to follow although, looking backward, there had been clues. I look forward to more books from this author.
