The day Meghan buried her father, the lord of Moresworth; she gained a rude, smutty-looking fat man named Alfred Stratton as her husband. The first thing he did, instead of consummating the union, was to beat her unmercifully. Stratton killed her wolf who was her bodyguard. For three years, none of that changed. Everything she loved was killed or maimed by Stratton and his guards. After three years, her maid, Elaine, who was treated the same way, killed herself to escape; Meghan killed Stratton and ran away to keep from being hung for murder.

Galen Thorne, Earl of Metetsa, Wethershire and Corniline, along with his younger brother Royce, were swimming when they found a young woman near death. She had been beaten and was bloody, unconscious and almost starved. This young woman, whom at first they had thought was a child because of her size, was Meghan. The men took her home with them, had their servants to clean her up, feed her and take care of her. One of the maids, Martha, was Royce’s “woman” and she did not appreciate how Royce was zeroing in on Meghan. That was problem number one! I can tell you that it went downhill from there.

Martha was the servant who had worked very hard to make herself #1in the eyes of all the men; Janice, the cook, was kinder and tried to help Meghan. The entire book is about the problems Meghan had to deal with which threatened her life. At first, it was hard for the men to believe how awful Martha was treating Meghan because of jealousy.

This book by Ms. Karella was chocked full of action and pitfalls that Meghan and Galen dealt with on a daily basis. I think the storytelling was so exciting that I absolutely could not put it down. I loved the story; it was never dull and the entire cast of characters will surprise you. And the ending will certainly surprise you. Be sure to read this book when you get the chance. You will not be sorry.
