| Lauren Richman, owner of a P.R. firm, believes there's a jinx on her family in the love department and vows never to allow a man to treat her badly. But she doesn't plan on rescuing drop dead gorgeous Professor Luis Hernandez from thugs. They're after a map leading to an ancient Mayan artifact and will stop at nothing, not even murder, to get it. When Lauren joins the professor's archaeological team in Mexico, she not only has to fend off Rocky, her long-time friend and would-be lover, but elude the men still hunting her and Luis. She and Luis outsmart their would-be killers and battle with demons from the past while seeking the treasure, all of which could destroy their future and their love.
This is an exciting, well-crafted book that not only held my interest all the way through, but kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen next. The danger keeps coming and escalates all the way to the end. It starts out with a surprise, that of the woman saving the man, and continues to intrigue throughout. Lauren, while troubled because of her family's past, is a spunky heroine one can't help liking. When Luis disappoints her over and over again, you want to sit him down and give him a tongue lashing like he's never experienced before. The two main characters, Lauren and Luis, along with a wonderful supporting cast, are interesting and well drawn. The love scenes are delicious, varied, and sometimes laced with humor. The writer does an excellent job of presenting the problems that threaten to keep them apart, both the external ones related to the search for the artifact, and the main characters' internal ones. The mystery behind Luis' attack is revealed gradually, but not without tragedy and heartbreak. The tension mounts until, by the ending, you are almost breathless with relief. There is no question that I would read another by this author.
