Charlotte Brantley, Charley to her friends, was a writer. At 36, she was a widow and she had two friends (Ellie and Peggy) and one dog (Friedl, a miniature wire-haired dachshund). She wrote regency romances and was a serious Georgette Heyer follower. One day, while trying to research the direction one of her characters was headed, she ran into David de Lisle, a professor of Medieval French History at the local university, on the steps of the local library. At 38, he was unmarried and, once he ran into Charley, he was determined to get acquainted with her.

Little did David know that Charley was the widow of an abuser, the daughter of an over-zealous religious fanatic, and a woman who, because she could not have children, was made to feel less than human. David was able to beautifully counteract the problems that she had to deal with. The fact that he willingly stuck with her was remarkable.

The differences in the two unattached individuals were obvious from the beginning. However, the horrendous way Charley viewed parts of her life was palpable. The powerful interpretation of her previous lifestyle actually gripped at my heart. I was so shocked at some of the ways Charley reacted to David’s advancements.

Ms. Kelly Ferjutz did an excellent job of describing how Charley had previously dealt with life and she exposed the raw emotions almost daily. The way that she presented the coping skills was unusual, but I found it riveting. I, literally, could not stop reading. Ms. Ferjutz’ style of writing fascinated me. There were sinister moments counteracted by disturbing actions on Charley’s part. The fact that David and Ellie did not give up on her was amazing.

I liked this book. The somewhat unconventional storyline made the book even more interesting in some ways. I believe that anyone who likes romance will like this book. The story is definitely not a carbon copy of all other romances. The reader will not be disappointed.
