Vince, a detective in the year 2038, has been on the case of several missing ethnic girls when he finds out that his sister is the latest victim. And just like the previous cases, the only clue is a Lepid scale at the scene. Three months later, more girls have disappeared and Vince is no closer to finding his sister. In fact, his chief pulls him off the case, partly for claiming the abductor has to be someone who works with Lepids. The alien, butterfly-like beings came to Earth and helped humanity cure diseases and stop wars. Vince's new case involves the man he was planning to speak with about the missing girls, Gerald Hoyt and his wife, Francine. Both were hyper-empaths that worked regularly with the Lepids at MacDill airbase as interpreters, as the Lepids dislike using vocal language. And there's a fresh scale left behind at that scene, too.

The crime leads him to Laura Albright, a stronger hyper-empath and Gerald's ex-wife. At first, she seems to know nothing about Gerald's murder...until someone seems to come after her.

Butterfly Scales was an excellent science-fiction romance with quite a bit of mystery. In truth, the sci-fi and mystery aspect of the story took over, leaving the romance as a really good bonus. I usually load books into my PDA to read them, but once I started reading the first chapter on my computer, I couldn't seem to take the time to do that. The writing made the story very addictive, and I had to find out everything that was happening. Laura's difficulty when it came to any involvement with Vince (or anyone else for that matter) made the conclusion to their romance very intense, emotionally and sexually. The characterization was very good, but it couldn't beat the pace and plot of the story. Butterfly Scales is my second favorite of Ms. Anderson's books and makes me happy to have found the author's work. Overall, when all elements of the story and flow are combined, Butterfly Scales comes out as a really, really good book worth not missing.
