| This was a wonderful book! I have previously read work by Ms. Donna Dalton and this one definitely did not disappoint. In 1869 Washington, D.C., Callista Louise Grant, first cousin of Ulysses S. Grant, was honored to be included in the ceremonies honoring his inauguration. She had lived with her aunt and uncle, Eunice and Horace Boggs since the death of her parents when she was small; that arrangement meant that Callie had very little right with her world. Because of this strained relationship with her guardians, she was not comfortable being in this large crowd. However, when her aunt woke her up the morning after, and found a strange man in her bed, her uncle was called and demanded that he, Captain Chase Brooks, marry her immediately.
Captain Brooks had previously given up on marriage after his first wife cheated on him, ran off and was killed. He did not want to marry anybody but, in order to keep his Army commission, he had little choice. Callie begged him not to leave her in Washington. He agreed, but planned to leave her at another Army post before he traveled on to Ft. Arbuckle. They stayed together, but did not consummate their marriage. Chase was determined to allow no one to interfere with his career and not even a wife would get him to take his focus off his soldiers. This novel had quite a few “cast members;” they were all diverse and well-written by Ms. Dalton. Callie was a down-trodden, shy woman who just wanted a chance to become important to someone and be loved by anyone. She was bashful, but she had intelligence in how to deal with various types of people in the military and the situations they had to face. Captain Brooks was harsh with his handling of his wife, but his soldiers were overjoyed that she had compassion and did not look down on them because of their circumstances. This is an outstanding book which I am sure you will enjoy! It follows the couple who went through a myriad of problems; would love triumph in the end? I definitely was not expecting the events they encountered. Great read!
