In a dark room at Minnie Morgan's place a young woman fought for her life giving birth to her child. Though the mother died the tiny infant girl was spared. Little Coral Anne Morgan came into the world knowing the only woman who she would ever call her mother as Minnie Morgan, madam of the brothel in a shady part of New Orleans.

Nineteen years past and times were rough in that part of town. A man named Sidney Layton was extorting money from every business owner and Minnie was no exception.

After a confrontation which ends in Minnie's death, Coral escapes to find a place to hide. She had no intention of becoming one of Layton's ladies.

Finding the body of a dead girl Lilly Malone, Coral takes her identity and clothes and heads for the church of the True Believers to join a wagon train heading west to become a handmaiden for one of the elders wives. Coral now known as Lilly joins the wagon train which is lead by Luke McDade a handsome man who can't seem to understand why a young girl like Lilly would want to give her life to not only being a handmaiden but to share the bed of a wife's husband.

The trail to Canaan is filled with many revelations and soon the innocent Lilly finds that she may have been a bit hasty in taking on this journey. She also finds that she has become attracted to the wagon master.

A short but entertaining story that captures the western romance in it's true form. One can almost hear the wheels of the wagon as you read the pages. Added to the assortment of characters in the plot one is never bored with the story. I enjoyed it.
