| Twenty-one years after the great war that killed 90% of the Earth's population, the world is starting to recover. The Army has been aggressively recruiting as it struggles to reclaim towns and bring civilization back the country. Corporal Samantha Cooper is medic. She provides healthcare services to towns as they are being rebuilt. She also carries rare genes and is designated RI (reproductive imperative). She'll be given special privileges in return for having babies and thus ensuring genetic diversity of the re-emerging human population. Sam can think of only man she wants to father her children -- her CO, Capt. David O'Reilly. He's the most decent man she has ever known. Now if she could just figure out how to ask him to be her first lover and her baby's father.
After reading the story blurb, I wasn't expecting a gentle, tender love story but that's what this is. Ms Campbell blends the tragic outcome of a devastating war with a story of hope and rebirth. She leaves out the grisly details of the war and presents us with aftermath and those who must deal with it. We are introduced to characters who survived the war and those who came after. David and Sam's story is played out amidst a setting that shows both the primitive, post-apocalyptic landscape and the hope of fledgling towns. David and Sam are well written characters whom I came to admire very much. The author weaves an inspiring tale of love and renewal. We learn of their very different pasts and their dreams for the future. Sam is a nineteen year old virgin and David takes her on a beautiful journey of sexual discovery. The love scenes are erotic and fulfilling. The entire story is breath of fresh air. My reading preferences usually run to darker, grittier books but I'm always outlook for relaxing, uplifting love stories for when I'm having one of 'those' days. This one more than fits the bill. I look forward to more from Ms. Campbell's Love From the Ashes series and encourage anyone looking for a sexy love story to give this one a try.
