| Alix Givet is the daughter of Queen Margaret of England’s Physician and the Queen’s Goddaughter. But when the king is dethroned and they are on the run, in order to give her sick father a home and a place to live out the remainder of his days, Alix is forced into a marriage to a cruel, somewhat disturbed man. After suffering at the hands of this cruel man, she's lucky enough to get a chance to escape, so she takes it. She runs across the border into Scotland where she meets Malcolm Scott, Laird of Dunglais. She convinces Malcolm to take her into his household to be teacher to his small daughter, Fiona. She quickly falls in love with the little girl and the father. But can Alix warm Malcolm’s cold heart and find a love that will last forever? Or will their past hurts destroy them both?
Bertrice Small writes a story unlike anyone else. Her stories leap off the pages as she writes with such detail that by the end of the book the reader feels they know each character personally. I love going along with Alix as she struggles to survive and sacrifices so much for her sick father. She is such a strong character who deserves a happy ending. And Malcolm is almost the perfect hero, except that at times I think he can be a little too forgiving. But it's not just these two characters, but the secondary characters, especially little Fiona, that truly makes this story phenomenal. This story travels the whole scope of emotions from excitement to complete rip-your-heart-out sadness. It will keep the reader on the edge of their seats and I would highly recommend this one to anyone looking for a great historical that will leave them longing for more.
