| What an incredible book! This plot is detailed and extensive, but never dull or boring! Katherine Leighton had been witness to the murder of her abusive father, her inquisitive brother, Johnny, and the repeated rape and murder of her precious mother who had withstood so much from her father. None of them deserved to die, but the death of her mother was so brutal and inhuman that Katherine could not get it out of her mind. Her uncle, her father’s brother Edward, had inherited everything including custody of Katherine; she wanted justice but he just wanted her married off. Because of rumors surrounding horrors done to her during the attack, he was willing to marry her to anyone he possibly could find. If only she could remember!
Captain Matthew Hamilton had been imprisoned for three months; the husband of a former lover was so jealous of him that he had ‘friends’ who managed to get him held. Lord Rudman, friends with Edward Leighton, schemed to get rid of Captain Hamilton and Katherine at the same time. Edward took her deep into the prison cells and showed her Captain Hamilton; she was not given a choice, nor was he, and they were told they would wed, he would regain his ship, and they were to leave for his home in America. Of course, neither wanted to marry; however, their lives were influenced by a myriad of characters who manipulated their futures. From Katherine’s Uncle Edward to Matthew’s Uncle, Lord Talbot Willingham—and everyone in between, both status people and servants alike—the conflicts of their lives together escalated constantly! Because Katherine was so aware of how the ton had treated her since her supposed rape, she was determined to stay married only long enough to get her freedom and her inheritance and then she was going to allow Matthew to leave her in London when he set sail. Ms. Teresa Reasor has written a dynamic, suspenseful tale that gets better with each page; there are quite a few surprises which make it a wonderful book. I highly recommend it to all!
