| Dorie Primfield, a Missouri native, is headed to Fort Walla Walla to marry a man she doesn't know. The pathetically naïve young woman is traveling with two trappers and warned to stay away from the Indians at the Trapper's Rendezvous, especially one Zander Durban. Zander is the son of a white man and his Indian “country wife.” As a child, young Alexander was thrown out and sent away to be raised by the Jesuits when he tried to stop his father from marrying a white woman instead of his mother. When he learns the pretty Dorie is on her way to marry a fur trader, he is furious. Like the white woman who married his father and displaced his mother and his siblings, Dorie will be displacing his close friend's sister, Mary, and her children. Incensed, he can only come up with one plan. Kidnap Dorie Primfield to save Mary from the same fate as his mother.
The kidnapping is a foolish idea that leads to a string of problems. Before they're done, they'll have trappers, traders, and Jesuit priests after them. There's new crisis in practically every chapter, and several narrow escapes and unfortunate misunderstandings. Once the book gets started, there is plenty of action and adventure. Dorie starts off as a spoiled brat though she tries to look at the best in everyone. Still, she seems to rate everyone by their skill at shooting and if they are better than she is. Zander's mixture of cultures, and religious upbringing, give him all kinds of moral questions he has to work out, often with the wrong result. I had a few problems with some of the coincidences used to solve some of the problems while other solutions were very ingenious. I applaud Ms. Scott's creativity. I liked the fast pace and knowing what the bad guys were up to. It really adds to the suspense. Well done. Captive Legacy is a long book, written with attention to detail and extensive research that makes it a very good read.
