| Convinced that the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin is single-handedly
responsible for starting the Civil War, Simon Legree struggles to come
to terms with the last ten years since that book's publication. Now,
having been captured by Yankees, the slavemaster is forced to also
deal with his own past. With help from Cassy, his favorite former
slave girl, and a number of historical and fictional personages, Simon
takes the reader along for the ride on his journey of self-discovery
and redemption.
The first-hand historical account of a man previously portrayed as vicious and uncaring provides an intriguing look at one of history's most notorious characters. Told from Simon's point of view, the book is at times touching, emotional and amusing. However, this short story lacks the sexual tension and heat usually associated with erotic romance. Perhaps better suited to the genre of historical fiction, Captive Master lacks romantic elements, and the overwhelming amount of backstory overshadows the events happening as the story progresses.
