Susana, the village healer, has inappropriate reactions whenever the widowed horseman Moor is near – strange since she ought be in love with a completely different horseman. Denial, however valiant, doesn’t work since Moor and Susana soon start to share dreams – the sign of true soul mates. Moor has already loved and lost, and is not eager to risk his heart. To distract himself from the delectable Susana, he enters the toughest race on the planet – a race he is too old to participate in. But that is not his only worry – his god-daughter and her husband are betrayed and attacked and Moor himself is captured and sold by ruthless slave traders.

‘Captive Stallion’ is the second installment in author Kate Hill’s new Horsemen series, which began with the wonderful ‘Dream Stallion’. The sequel, however, disappoints. The book is – intentionally or unintentionally – divided in two. The first part has a plethora of plots – Moor’s denial of the new love, Susana’s divided heart, the race and the attacks on Moor’s god-daughter and her husband – the protagonists of the first book. The latter sub-plot, incidentally, is the main plot of the first novel ‘Dream Stallion’, so those who have read the first novel know roughly what is going to happen. Confused yet? The second part of the book is radically different. It stands completely free from the first part and has a single plot – the slave traders. In this part, Ms. Hill shows her considerable talent as a writer. It is a tight and emotional description of the horrible conditions of the slaves.

With more editing this book as a whole could have been a coherent and a good read. Suffer through the first part and enjoy the second part in the hopes that the third installment in the series will be better.
