Isis has had a traumatic family life, and is relieved when she feels like she has finally escaped the trauma. Now that she’s finally making enough money to support herself by stripping, she’s able to take a breath and understand what has happened to her emotionally because of her past. While she’s physically better, she knows deep down that she has personal issues that someday she needs to solve if she ever wants to get on with her life. While in some respects she doesn’t feel she will ever need a man, Isis doesn’t let anyone close to her, and she has been scared to have any kind of friendly relationship with people because she doesn’t want to care. She’s convinced herself that it’s not needed, and thinks she is happy with that. One day on her way home she runs into an unusual man who seems to not only be able to control fire, but have her emotions in an uproar as well.

Flare has been charged to protect Isis, because she has some special abilities that seem to attract the daemons that his people hunt and protect humans from. From the moment he saw her, he knew that she was the one for him, and he’s had a hard time keeping out of her life. When a chance attack brings him out in the open and in Isis’s sights, he knows that he can never fade in the background again and let her go. Especially when he finds out what she does at work….

I didn’t think that Isis and Flare had a lot of chemistry, although the characters tried really hard and I liked both of them. Flare seemed a little distant, but Isis really had a lot of personality and troubles, which drew me to her. I was surprised at how fast she fell for Flare and trusted what he was doing; I wouldn’t have thought with her life experiences that she would do that. I don’t think that you need to read the whole Shikar series in order to enjoy this book, although it would definitely help to understand what the daemons are and why they are fighting them. Caress of Flame is a good read that has a lot of action and emotion from Isis, and will definitely keep you entertained.
