Garrick of Hawkwood is sent to Fairfield to marry its mistress, Lady Helene D'Arcy. He finds that she is missing and that Fairfield is known as Castle Ladyslipper ruled by Emma D'Arcy, Helene's stepdaughter. A comedy of errors begins as Emma and Garrick face-off, clearly at odds but undeniably attracted to each other with Emma's relatives meddling all the time. Rose, Emma's great-grandmother spirit, who brought a curse on all the women in Emma's family, has taken to haunting him too. It is a story of love conquering all even with misunderstandings in the midst.

Garrick of Hawkwood is a soldier of fortune who just wants to marry a rich heiress and settle down, at the same time proving his father wrong. He is a strong, stubborn character who values honesty above everything. Even in anger he manages to cool down if reasoned with and is not afraid to admit when he is wrong. Emma on the other hand, is willing to do everything to thwart Garrick and the king. She is hot-headed, temperamental and a quick-thinker.

While reading this book, I went through many different reactions. It was funny at times and sad in some but the main feeling I felt throughout was "what just happened?" I found it weird that the characters were able to change their feelings so quickly at suggestions that it was baffling, especially since the one on the other end did not seem to find anything different. Emma especially I found too dense and stubborn when dealing with Garrick while witty and intelligent when dealing with others. Garrick was comparatively reasonable and just in his feeling of betrayal. How he was haunted by Rose is not explained, just hinted throughout the book and giving Garrick's reaction, as if it's not a big deal. Emma's lying over and over again to Garrick again did not clarify to me in exactly what way she loved him.

The chemistry between them was not explosive either. What I did find really touching was the ending, the final chapter. Garrick totally won me over but overall I found this book just okay. It is a fun if one just wants to pass time but not for a good in-depth emotional read.
