Janus is a vampire with his own set of values. He’s fiercely loyal to the elder who turned him while still making his own decisions about how best to protect the humans and newly turned vampires in their area. Varaugh is their rival, a part-human, part-vampire seeking a way not to die. Hiroshi is a character as evil as Varaugh, maybe worse. Vision can’t seem to decide where his loyalties lie.

Castoffs has some interesting twists in it about vampires and how they function that I haven’t read in other books. Ms. Fiddler gives them a blood memory of their life and bodily functions when they were human. For the lusty side of us the characters get to engage in explicit individual and sometimes ménage M/M sex to relax, show power, forge alliances and sometimes just for the heck of it. This book would have been much better if it were longer. A longer story could have fleshed out some of the detail, made some of the transitions from place to place and situation to situation more detailed. Still, even though there were some distractions in following the storyline at times, it was a quick, fun read.
