| Devin and Talis are lovers and Magic users. Suddenly the Magic, though, has a mind of its own, and when they are intimate, Devin is nearly drained of his life, unexpectedly. Before he lost consciousness, Devin had turned green and literally glowed. Due to the apparent danger posed to Devin, his sister Keria and her lover, Aaron, also a Mage, demand that Talis return to his former Circle and seek input from their historians and research from their vaster libraries. Talis refuses to return to his life there, though; and since he won’t return, Aaron hightails off on a “research trip” back to the Circle’s Manse, Devin in tow.
The only person to befriend Devin is Cait, who knows all about the reasons Talis fled the Manse. When Devin discovers Cait flayed and bleeding in the study the next morning, and discovers that she has been utilized In a plot to control and destroy Talis, he is determined to flee with her. When they do, Devin discovers that he and Cait together can also awaken the Magic, strongly enough to touch Talis across all the miles; but between Devin and Cait the Magic doesn’t seem so destructive as with Devin and Talis. I really enjoyed this book, to a point; I would have liked to have seen more depth in the characters, and I would have benefited from reading the first volume in the series, as this is definitely not a stand-alone novel and I had to fill in too much left unsaid. However, other than that, I found the story fascinating and definitely a page-turner; after I read the first in the series, I do plan to read this again. I give it 4.5 because I think it just doesn’t work as well as a stand-alone story. The sensuality is m/m, but fairly subtle, but there is explicit m/f intimacy, and some violence.
