| Cat and Mouse is far from the first book in Ms. Munro's Middlemarch series, but it can easily be read as a standalone story, which was a great plus for this reader, having never read any of this author's work before.
Lana is a cat in a world populated by humans and shifters alike. I got the impression that in this society the shifter species are known to humans and accepted by them and that they live among each other comfortably, but this fact was not specifically confirmed within the book. However, in the town of Middlemarch at least, it seemed that shifters are in the strong majority. I liked the sense that Middlemarch was the place where all shifters come when they are looking for home. Lana, having lost her husband to an accident a number of years ago, has finally decided that she needs to get on with her life -- and she'll start by getting laid. Who better to perform that service than Duncan Ross. On the other hand, Duncan has been waiting for a long time to get his paws on Lana, and now that he has his chance to mate with her, he's not going to let a small thing like her wish to keep things strictly recreational keep him from doing his damndest to change her mind and make her his own. Cat and Mouse was easy to get into and impossible not to like. A sexy story built around the fun of "the chase," I enjoyed the give and take between the two characters. Duncan is a strong man who knows exactly what he wants, but then again Lana is an equally strong woman—and the two oof them have a hell of a time figuring out the ground rules of the game, until they both realize it isn't a game anymore.
