| The Harbour Rest Home where Celia Summers works as an art therapist and aerobics instructor is going to be closed because it can't update to meet codes. Celia and the older people who live there stage protests, rappel down from a church steeple and do all they can to try to save the only home the feisty elders have. Live in partner Martin complicates her life from every direction with his failure to appreciate her, understand her efforts or act like a supportive mate.
Charlotte Chalmers has penned an exceptional tale that is witty, well developed and a great read. Every one of the residents could be a book all on their own. Eleanor the cigarillo smoking, independent woman with the acidic humor usually aimed at Colonel Burrows is great. May, the barefoot woman who lets people think she's got a screw loose hides her talents behind comments about her almost husband that are really a hoot. Celia and Martin have a relationship that would probably drive a lot of people a little mad. He's a con from the word go who almost gets away with some really despicable behavior. Teenage son Luke is a charmer. He's struggled in school with dyslexia but his knowledge of old movies is astounding. Adding his total loyalty to his mom and his brotherly escapades with little brother Ben makes him the kind of boy any of us would love to have as our own. Alex is a policeman with a handicapped daughter Kelly. His past isn't one he's proud of but the people at the home and Celia help him grow through it. Kelly is able to come out of her shell around the elders who refuse to pity her. Instead they encourage her to strut her talents helping her grow into a typical almost teenager. Ms. Chalmers has written one of those books that showcases the talents of older people. Being the daughter of people who led productive lives well into their 80s I may appreciate that more than most. Not only that, she writes a love story that could mirror many such romances that go on every day. I really like this entire storyline, the wit, dialogue and excellent characters and great scenarios throughout. I had a hard time putting the book down and think readers will find it a superb tale full of smiles.
