| Riven has been captured from earth by some aliens, and as far as he knows he has nothing to go back to even if he could. Earth has been absolutely destroyed, and with it his whole way of life. Riven has thought it over, and has decided that he is going to meet whatever comes to him with dignity, if nothing else. When he's taken to meet his new master and finds out that what's expected of him he isn't so sure that he be able to withstand the ghosts of his past.
You know, this review was unexpectedly hard to write. The story is great, and the build up in the character Riven is unexpected and fascinating. He's not all that he seems at the beginning, and the way Willa Okati develops his character makes this book hard to put down. The story is about a gay man, so there is plenty of m/m sex, BDSM, and a scene that is pretty brutal, these elements are there for a reason, and not simply gratuitous sex thrown in because it's erotica. She took me on a very compelling journey into his mind, and why he is reacting the way he does. It's sort of a story within a story, with a much unexpected ending in one of them. I thought that Chain of Thorns was a magnificent story of a journey into one persons psyche, and I will definitely be on the look out for more from this talented author.
