| The year is 1945. The war is over and Cara Williams is about to get the shock of her life. Her enlisted husband, Rand Williams, presumed dead for the last three years is very much alive, and back to claim a place in Cara's life and her heart. But much has changed since Rand joined the army all those years ago. How will Cara reconcile her new business, her new lover, and new baby with the husband from her past?
I enjoyed the time period this book takes place in. World War II romances are quite a rarity, so it was interesting to read a novel which brings the era to life so vividly. Cara is a strong character. She's a doting mother, a self-made entrepreneur, and all around survivor. Rand is a returned war hero, changed by the violent experience and with more than a few secrets in his past. The whole story harkens back to another era, not only in the nostalgic setting, but also in the narrative style. There are many passionate moments between the characters, but the actual love scenes are discreetly not shown. The story is told exclusively through the heroine's eyes -- something we rarely see nowadays. The results of this are mixed. It works in that the heroine, and the reader, are never quite sure what Rand is thinking. However, Rand has enough un-heroic moments that the audience needs to understand his point of view. Otherwise, the audience may lose sympathy for him. Altogether it's an engaging read. The author has a talent for dialogue and making a scene feel authentic. Unfortunately, there were too many questions left unanswered by the book's end. The final result is that the character of Rand, and his relationship with Cara, never feel truly explored.
