| Things begin changing the moment Susan Rodriguez, a former lover, bursts back into Harry Dresden's life asking for his help. Duchess Arianna, a vampire of the Red Court, has taken the daughter Susan never told Harry he had. Now they'll have to work together to figure out a way to rescue their daughter before the Red Court can carry out their plans. But the Red Court has sent a pair of vampires and gotten the FBI involved to slow Harry down. Without the support of the White Council, Harry's only recourse may be to tap into the dark power inside.
Susan's revelation that Harry is a father is a great way to capture readers and suck them into the story. Both characters are well written and their reactions to the situation are as realistic as it's possible to be given one is a wizard and the other a half-turned vampire. They're both highly emotional and willing to do whatever it takes to get their daughter back, even things they never would have considered doing before. Everything they do throughout the novel is all about being there for their daughter, especially Harry. His bond to the daughter he has never met really highlights the type of person he is and his readiness to step into the role of father. Though this is part of the Dresden Files series, this book can be read on its own. Having read the preceding books in the series may be helpful in certain aspects, but there is enough explanation in this book to understand what is going on and who all the characters are and how they relate to Harry. Jim Butcher has really outdone himself with this novel. It's a fast-paced roller coaster ride of a story where Harry is forced to make choices about himself in order to protect an innocent child. There are a lot of interesting twists that will keep readers turning pages to find out what's going to happen next. The ending is good, but the last few pages are slightly unexpected and will leave people anxious for more.
