| Mandy St. Claire was a gangly teen with a big crush on Chase Tremaine, the older brother of her best friend. She’s grown up quite nicely, though she’s still a bit clumsy and often speaks without thinking. She’s an accountant - a partner in her own newly formed firm. They have one big account: Brook Incorporated. Amanda discovers a five million dollar error in the books. And people at Brooks start dying at the hands of a hit man.
Chase Tremaine became a cop after a stint in the military. Amanda falls into his lap at his sister Melody’s wedding -- and Chase is intrigued by the change. He doesn’t know quite how to do his police duty and protect her when she’s having such a profound effect on him. Amanda hasn’t lost that crush and doesn’t think a lowly accountant could be a mob target -- until she’s shot at. She reacts to Chase with both fire and ice. She does not want to be simply “a job.” Both brainy and emotional, Amanda is a likable 22-year-old. The hit man keeps messing up, and the danger keeps growing. Chase’s partner Jeremy Keech knows his buddy’s been bitten by the love bug. And old Army buddies Eddie Cavanetti and Randall Morgan show up to complicate things, which, of course, are never as they seem. Chase is also likable and the reader is given some real insight into the mind of the bad guy. Small town garage mechanic Buck Monroe and his feisty petite sister Lacey Jane are wonderful supporting characters. The conclusion is wild and action-packed. Almost all questions are answered. (I still don’t know the significance of the papers Amanda “misplaced.”) This is suspense with a large dose of humor and a very enjoyable read.
