| Andrew Hastings wasn't interested in settling dow. As a matter of fact he was more of a loner. Well, that was until he happened to be on the street one afternoon and bumbed into Jessica Templeton. Jessica Templeton was indeed one of the most beautiful women in New Oreleams. Her sparkling blue eyes held the Lt. Col. in awe and he insisted that he walk her home and right to the gate. Jessica thought of the handsome officer as a white knight who would rescue the fair maiden in distress. Before the evening was over they were engaged and a few days later they were marrried. A bit of a whirl wind courtship yet both of them knew it was love at first sight.
The newleyweds were planning a new life together went the rummors of war became reality and Andrew recieves his orders to head back North. Their parting was tearful but Andrew promised her he would return. Their letters were filled with their longing to be together yet Jessica never once told him of the passing of both of her parents nor the fact that she was about to have his child. As the war went on there were stories of deserters who had left the fight and were now robbing innocent people as they ran away from the law. Jessica feared for her young daughter's life and sent Sarah to Caitlyn, Jessica's sister, until some type of order was restored. A single woman in a house all by herself was easy thought the three deserters as they entered the house that night. Though Jessica put up a fight she was no match for the one called Baker who was vicious, brutal and sadistic. He hated all women and inflicting pain on them was his greatest joy. Each time he was done Jessica prayed that she would either die or he would kill her but her prayers were not answered. They decided to take her as hostage and prolong their fun and her torment. It wasn't until sometime later that Andrew was told of the deserters and that they were close to New Orleans. He still didn't know that his beloved Jessica, his angel, was their hostage. His job was to find them and take whatever measures to apprehend and stop them. Does Andrew find his angel? You'll have to read the book but I will tell you one clue there is a wonderful surprise at the end. The story has the reader feeling every moment Jessica is held hostage. The secondary characters are so well defined one feels they were standing just off to the right the whole time just waiting to walk in. A love story that spans across time, miles and a war and will never die. There should be more Andrew Hastings in this world.
