| Nikki and Michael are back in a new book that continues the story of their romance. It's been four months since their last case. They have been living together and enjoying every minute. Almost. Because Michael can't accept that Nikki can take care of herself, and refuses to let her help him on his cases. Nikki is an independent woman, and doesn't want to find herself sitting around for the next couple hundred years staring at the walls. When one of Michael's assignments takes him to Ireland, Nikki is once again left alone. This time, her old boss Jake calls her to ask her to go to San Francisco to help him with a kidnapping. Some of his wife's friends have been kidnapped and murdered. The most recent one is his best friend's wife. Nikki decides to go and help her old partner, and gets on a plane to San Francisco.
On his way home, Michael can't wait to see Nikki. He gets a communication from his boss insisting that he go to another case in San Francisco. It seems that there is a group of Vampires kidnapping women and mutilating them, and he's the only one that can take care of the situation. He wants to see Nikki first, and rushes home. When he gets there, he discovers that she's left, and can't believe her destination… San Francisco. On the same case! But she has no idea what she's getting into, and he is frantic to get there and protect her. Nikki doesn't agree, but she just doesn't understand… Or is it Michael that doesn't understand? Can these two people work out their differences? Chasing the Shadows is a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. There is so much going on that it's not possible to put it in a short synopsis without spoiling the story. Nikki is once again a strong individual, who is slowly being smothered with love from Micheal. Her psychic powers are getting stronger, and no one seems to know what she is capable of doing. I like how she reacts to Michaels tendency to over protect, because it's just how you would expect a woman like her to react. Her frustration is understandable, and the way she deals with it is just like I would expect. Michael is also frustrated, and can't understand why Nikki won't just drop it and let him protect her. They are both deeply in love, but have problems understanding the other's point of view. Once again, the action is non-stop and highly entertaining. You can't stop reading once you start. The series always takes up where the last one ended, and the relationship is slowly moving along during the series. While this could be a stand alone book, I think you would be better off to read the other two books Hearts in Darkness and Dancing with the Devil to get the full effect. Kerri Arthur doesn't pull any punches, and the people in the story don't always get saved and have a happy ending. I can't wait to read the next in the series, Kissing the Night Goodbye. Chasing the Shadows is a definite keeper, and highly recommended.
