| Red, Rani Elissa Davis, left town as a young girl. She returns to Texas 6 years later a full-grown woman. Red and her brother Rory had grown up in a very dysfunctional family - alcoholic parents, mother, a whore and a drunk, also a regular at the local bar, father, an SOB who hit Rory and was away all week working on an oilrig. Father died when Red was a teenager. Then Red found she was always scared at home. Men came to see her mother and gave Red unwanted, scary attention and danger, leading to her moving out at age 17. Across the street there was Klint's family - Klint, Rory's best friend since 4th grade, his two brothers Kevin and Kalvin, mother Opal who always baked, father JJ, both parents always showing their love for their children. Would she still have feelings for Klint, her brother Rory's best friend? What would happen if Red and Klint share the holidays with a Christmas Carol?
I really enjoyed the relationship of Red and Klint. It showed a situation where two people have known each other all their lives and one day they both are feeling - 'you turned out really hot when you grew up!' It also added to the intensity between them that Rory, Red's brother and Klint's best friend, was having the same reaction to the two of them. Rory was also the only person not surprised by the change in the relationship between Red and Klint. The erotic connection between Red and Klint is beautifully written by Ms. Davidson. There was a poignancy about it that made it seem like destiny. I recommend this book to everyone.
