Melinda Jane Frazier had given up a private life to care for her parents. Now they were both dead and she lived alone with her faithful dog Brownie. She had friends and, as postmistress of her hometown, she often saw most of them. It was, however, a lonely existence with no great prospects for her to have a family of her own. That was, until in the midst of a snowstorm, she heard someone banging on her front door. She was afraid to open the door but she knew whoever was out there would freeze if she didn’t.

Hezekiah Porter had carried his seven-year-old son Timothy about as far as either of them could go. He would do whatever was necessary to get inside out of the blinding snow. Zeke was a wanderer and had been since the death of his wife. His mother-in-law had kept Timothy until her death. Now Zeke had taken his son with him. The storm caught them unawares. Somehow he talked his way into Melinda’s home. They stayed for months before Zeke felt his wanderlust rearing its head.

Ms. Bullock has written a very poignant story which was fast paced and spell-binding. I couldn’t find a stopping place. I really enjoyed the way she described her characters and made them become real on the pages of her book. She used the differences in her characters’ emotions to develop this inspirational novel which is appropriate for all ages. Both the main characters had challenges to face and, even though there was an attraction, Zeke refused to allow himself to be trapped even though his son needed stability.

There were many supporting characters that helped tell this story. There was much concern among her friends because of their caring for Melinda. The book explored various emotional ties and showed how sometimes you have to trust your outcome to God. The ending was inevitable. However, how Bullock arrived at that happily ever after made the journey a joy to read. I recommend this book to anyone as a great read.
