Kat Gabriel is a very strong empathy whose ability can be used to kill when pushed into defending herself or those she cares for. She learned that the hard way when she used it to protect Andrew Callaghan a year ago. She's dealing with the deaths she caused and the loss of her friendship with Andrew. He's stayed away from her so he can become the protector she needs, stronger and in control of his wolf. Now they're being forced together as they dig into her mother's past and must face their explosive and extremely strong feelings for each other.

The story jumps right into the action from the very beginning. There is a definitely sense of foreboding the minute Kat opens the email about the information regarding her mother, and it's not just because of the possible danger from the psychic cult her mother had been a part of. The possibility of working with Andrew ties her in knots because she is still as in love with him as she's ever been and she's afraid they'll only hurt each other more if they spend time together. Andrew has the same fear, but his need to protect Kat is even stronger. Their need to prevent each other from hurting, even when they're the source of the pain, highlights just how much they care for each other and the fact that they truly do belong together. And the passion that sparks anytime they touch just drives that point home.

This is an absolutely fantastic addition to the Southern Arcana series. Moira Rogers has really outdone herself with Andrew and Kat's story. Readers are taken along on the emotional roller coaster Kat and Andrew experience as they deal with everything that has happened to them in the past year and over the course of the story. All of the main characters from the previous stories appear and really enrich the story. Though this can be read by itself, I would recommend reading the other three books in the series first.
