| Kirby Brown was lucky she wasn't home when the killer struck, but she didn't
feel very lucky since her best friend Helen and her boyfriend were killed.
The scary thing was they weren't just killed but slaughtered. And Kirby
can sense that the killer is still after her, that she is in mortal danger.
She finds out she's right when the police that have her in protective custody are killed. Kirby escapes out the bathroom window
and almost gets away but the killer grabs her and Kirby has to use her powers
to defend herself. That is when she wonders what kind of monster is after
her, because most things would be killed by the electrical charges that she
transmits through her body. It does stun the monster long enough for her
to run away and that's when she runs into Doyle Fitzgerald who arrives with
the help of a witch in the nick of time to save her from the manarei. Manarei
are proficient hunters and can assume the shape of anyone so easily blend
into situations and are hard to distinguish.
Doyle Fitzgerald has been sent to Melbourne, Australia by the Damask Circle to find the killer of young women. They suspect unnatural forces from the way the bodies are found and the symbols by the door. Their suspicions are confirmed when the witch Camille reads the bodies and finds out who the victims were and that they were killed by manarei. The only thing they don't know is the identity of the killer and why that party is killing the women. The only thing they can tell is that the victims had psychic abilities and that they were stolen from them before they died. When Camille tells him he has to go and protect Kirby now, and that if he doesn't she will die, he doesn't know what he's in for. Meeting Kirby will change his life forever. Kirby has no idea why Doyle has shown up to help her, and she doesn't trust him. But she doesn't have much choice but to go with him. It's either that or be killed. Doyle is amazed and flabbergasted when he meets Kirby for he thought we would be different from his father and grandfather. They had known as soon as they met their mates and now the same thing has happened to him for he knows that Kirby is his mate. The trouble is that with Kirby's past she doesn't trust and might never accept him. Now he is even more determined to find out who is trying to kill Kirby and why, for he can't lose her. Now he must also get Kirby to remember her past. This is Ms. Arthur's second Damask Circle book and this one is as fabulous as the first one. The suspense of having the witch chasing Kirby and sending zombies and other evil minions against her and Doyle is spellbinding. Kirby's power is amazing and having her face and accept her friend's death and gift to her is beautifully fulfilling. Then having Kirby accept Doyle and his shape-changing abilities as well as realize that there are other people who have things in their past that she isn't alone unless she chooses to be. I highly recommend this paranormal series for everyone into paranormals.
