| Twenty short stories about P.I. Sharon Knowles give some insight into the life and emotions of this investigator. Many of the stories left me wanting “the rest of the story,” but all were taut, succinct and engrossing.
Sharon is in her mid 30s, smart and single. No romance here, just some intriguing vignettes. She loves to match wits with killers, and these are mostly brief puzzles with punchy endings. There is a wide variety of subject matter. “Teeth of the Hydra” gives us a wife’s revenge, while “See You in September” combines gang violence and black magic. A geriatric citizen disappears in “Last Whistle Stop” and “Deep Six” gives us a not-so-perfect way to dispose of a body. We have murder, suicide and a carrot loving cat in the pages of this anthology. This is a fine read for anyone who enjoys the pulp fiction type of story. Sharon’s personality softens the gore and often makes us contemplate how close any of us could be to the criminal mind.
