| Bobbie Leighton has worked very hard to get where she is in her career as an FBI agent. She overcame a brutal attack by a vicious serial killer and committed herself to helping others. Hard work and dedication paved her pay down the road to success. But when Joe Sullivan, a former homicide detective who she has a rather involved personal history with, is assigned as her partner, her undercover investigation into a man suspected of murder and baby trafficking becomes more complicated. Joe Sullivan has one major reason for wanting to be involved in this investigation -- he suspects the subject of the investigation, Bradley Sterling, of murdering his brother. As they try to put their past behind them and ignore the barely concealed passion simmering between them, Bobby and Joe work together to try to bring down Sterling's monstrous operation.
Beyond the Code of Conduct was a good read, however, I don't know that I would classify it as a suspense thriller, but rather more of a contemporary with the slightest dash of action/danger thrown in at the very end. I liked the storyline, but felt that it was a little underdeveloped. When I started reading this book I was expecting a lot more. It seemed like it focused on the relationship between Bobbie and Joe primarily and elaborated on the investigation as more of an afterthought. Though I felt the story could have been more involved, I really enjoyed the characters. The realism that she wove into the characters' personalities, Joe's especially, was very refreshing. Their perspectives and feelings made them come alive for me. I also liked the interaction between them and the supporting characters, though it was very brief. It made me look forward to reading their stories. Overall, though the book wasn't quite what I was expecting, I did still enjoy reading it and look forward to reading more about the Sullivan's.
