Meg Stanton’s life is unraveling. She is a homicide detective and has encountered one of the most shocking cases she’s ever seen. Someone is implanting bomb like devices into the victim’s chest and when the victim is no longer needed they appear to just explode from the inside out? In her personal life, her daughter Jazz is acting out demanding to know about Meg’s well hidden past and who Jazz’s father is. Then the FBI shows up to take over the case and the agent is her husband, Field Weston, who disappeared 10 years ago without a word. There is something suspicious about all of these cases and they may have some mysterious link to Meg’s own past. How many people will have to die before Meg and Field figure out what in the world is going on?

Cold Scheme is a brilliant psychological thiller and romantic suspense all rolled up into one. I really hope that the scenario proposed in this story is not possible but it certainly seems conceivable. It is a terrifying thought that maybe someday medical personnel could implant devices into someone that could be turned into a weapon; a kind of internal bomb.

The main characters of Meg and Field are well developed and I quickly felt both sympathetic and involved in their struggle and potential romance. They not only have a very complicated case that deserves their undivided attention but they have an extremely complicated history that could become too distracting and involves unresolved issues. I also liked some of the supporting characters who are able to add drama and humor to the tale.

The “scheme” that Meg and Field are investigating is elaborate and complicated and I was completely engrossed in the story trying to solve it right along with them. Ms. Petrick masterfully leads the reader through the intricate case dropping a few clues along the way and building the story all the way to the climatic ending. I loved this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a complicated psychological mystery that draws you into the story and keeps you guessing to the end!
