| This is one plot that would never have crossed my mind, but is certainly poignant at this time. Outside Baghdad, Iraq, Lance Corporal Jessica Benally and her main assistant, Lance Corporal Cheri Washington, are busily preparing dinner for the troops. Nobody is surprised that Jess is making pineapple upside down cake because they know that the recon team is arriving to provide security for tomorrow’s movement. Staff Sergeant Brian Mitchell has shown interest in Jess and she in him. Certainly Iraq is not the best location for falling in love, but the attraction is evident!
The next morning, Brian finds a bomb attached to the bottom of the truck in which Jess and Cheri are traveling. Instead of running away, he ran toward them, trying to save both women! Cheri died; Jess did not, but was badly woundedso was Brian. Months later, they find each other at the Bethesda, Maryland naval hospital; both of them are in seriously life-threatening condition. Neither of them seemed to be getting any better. Sarah Black has taken a very serious situation and given it a wonderful slant! All of us are aware of the reputation of U.S. Marines, and these people do not fall short of this commitment. The main characters are strong, but discouraged, and both face possible death from their wounds. No one would be surprised to see either (or both) of them falter and give up. She tells a potentially horrific story while showing how the involvement of other people can change circumstances. This is a great book and I recommend it highly!
