After eight months of fighting in the Vietnam War, Private Tom Stabler is given a leave of absence to go home for a visit. Home is supposed to be a place of fond memories and soothing comfort but once he is home, he feels he doesnąt fit in, after being in the Vietnam jungles. After his head hits the pillow, he has a tendency of reaching out for his rifle, forgetting he is under the safe roof of his home. It appears old habits do not die. The war has left him embedded with emotional scars. His thoughts wander to his first love, Susan, and for a moment his heart feels at peace. Susan Swenson has kept in touch with Tom, and their correspondence in some way, has given them strength to go on with their lives. While he has been fighting a war, she has been finishing up her nursing school. She is thrilled to see him home again. The two spend as much time together as Susan tries to ease his mind on things making Tom see things in a different light.

Coming Home is a heartrending tale that grabs the reader. There are so many different points and highlights to the story that I feel overwhelms the reader even more. Dee S. Knight sketches two characters that explode on the pages with their emotion as well as the passion they feel toward each other. I could only imagine what Tom went through. Having married someone who was indeed sent to the Vietnam War twice, this story was almost like a coming home for me. I have seen what scars can inflict on those who leave home and return. Ms. Knight captures the realistic moments that come alive in her prose.
