| Compromising Positions is about three women, best friends, each with her own set of problems. Crystal is married to Wes, with children Jordan, 12-year-old daughter, and her younger son David, who starts a new job in which she has late hours and some overnight travel. Maureen runs a beauty/barber shop and is divorced from Jeff for four years and has a daughter, Rhianna, a 17-year-old senior in high school whose life style and attitude cause her mother many more problems than a typical teenager. The third best friend is Patsy, a nurse with the Sheriff’s Department, who has been married to Bud for 10 years; she comes home early from visiting her brother out of town and finds her husband with his best friend. Both men are dressed in Patsy’s lingerie and doing disgusting things with each other! She keeps her bags packed and goes to Crystal’s to stay.
Each woman has definite problems but they depend on each other to work out the dilemmas as each arises. The ladies know that her friends will baby sit, cook, do laundry, make phone calls, or anything necessary to make life easier for her friends. This is evident over and over. The three forty-something woman are strong personality wise, but each has her own shortfalls concerning her emotional strength. These women want something special in the men in their lives; just having a man is not enough. Each one demands depth and strength from herself; therefore, her significant other must have the same. I have never before read Ms. Edmondson’s work; I laughed and I cried. I really liked the book; much of what was written was identifiable to any woman who might read it. I think all of us can imagine what we would do if any of these circumstances were ours. This actually felt like reading a tribute to women and friendship. I heartily recommend this book to any woman who would like to reflect on middle-age circumstances, love, children and careers. You will be glad you read it! I am.
