| Haynes County, GA has been known as the most corrupt place in state law enforcement for years. Kathleen Palmer and her partner Altee Price of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating a suspicious death after a police chase in the county when they meet a new officer on the force. Jason Harding seems as corrupt as his cousin Jim Ed Reese but Kathleen is inexplicably attracted to him. Will she ruin her reputation and career by following her belief that he isn¡t painted with the same brush as the other county officers?
Linda Winfree gives us a well crafted romance and an investigation that feels like it could be real. The edge-of-your-seat-suspense is even better because we get to know Jason and Kathleen. As we learn her story it would be hard for a reader not to hope she finds happiness. We see Jason struggling to do things totally against his code of honor as he tries to take down corrupt officers of the law. I doubt if there will be much sympathy for Jim Ed after seeing how happy he is to be vicious and to what lengths he's willing to go to have what he wants. There is a great feeling when one of the people helping to bring Jim Ed down is someone he's hurt for years. The author builds her storyline, characters, and dialogue well. There's no extraneous bits or attempts to put out red herrings. We know the bad guys and the good guys. We just have to follow the path through the pages to find out if Ms. Winfree can take them down! I found this to be one of those tales that pulled me in, got me involved, and never let me down. I'm looking forward to more of the same in this series.
