| Lisa testified against her boyfriend, Deacon, three years ago, sending him to prison for robbing a Circle K. Now he's out and Lisa has a new boyfriend, the man that arrested Deacon. She also still feels attracted to Deacon and guilty over testifying against him. After finding out that he can't find any job other than waiting tables, despite having credentials for far better jobs, Lisa persuades her father to hire him. When Deacon saves her from a teenaged boy's attack, she defends him to her boyfriend, the police officer investigating the incident. At home, Lisa's things begin to disappear and she becomes convinced she's overworked and misplacing things. Her sister's behavior is becoming more erratic and selfish. When an email begins displaying disturbing pornographic and violent pictures on Lisa's computer, suspicion is cast on Deacon as the creator of the email.
As their relationship slowly progresses, Deacon wants to put the past behind him but is constantly reminded that he can't. Lisa is still suspicious of Deacon, despite the desire to leave the past in the past. I enjoyed the suspense in the plot but thought Lisa should've been more suspicious of the real culprit. The style of the story was a little different from what I've read from Ms. Hart before, the emotions between the characters not as intense. I think the story would be good for those readers that really love suspense of any kind, as the suspense seemed to take a larger part of the story than the romance.
