Louisa Schmetterling was smuggled out of Germany and sent to Tucson, Arizona, to stay with a college roommate of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. After being exposed as part of the Resistance Workers in Nazi, Germany, she was sent to Copper Springs to live with Reverend Robert Gordon, his aunt and his young son. The family and townsfolk were told Louisa was on a holiday and a guest of the Gordon's.

Reverend Gordon held his own personal secrets. No one knew what happened to his wife and why she left him and their small, deaf son. He was unaware how the town's banker, Friedrich Mueller, would play such a shocking part in Robert's life. He was from the same part of Germany that Louisa came from. Robert's confusion over how his life had fallen apart so badly would be fascinating to watch unfold.

This book was told in the first-person point of view which typically is not my favourite. This plot was intense and complicated. It was, at times, hard to entirely comprehend. It was an intriguing book which I enjoyed, but it wasn't always flowing at a gripping pace. This book was also more historical than romance.

Having said that let me hasten to say that I was fascinated by the storyline. Even though I had not expected this reaction, it was a reintroduction into the historical aspects of the subject matter. This timeframe was an intense and horrendous period in our history. The book reminded me how hard it was to live through the actions of the war.

By the conclusion of this book, I was so involved that I was thrilled to immediately pick up the sequel and read it. I recommend this book to everyone who loves history. This author showed an incredible ability to reach her audience. This was my first introduction to her writing. It will definitely not be the last.
